More Q&A with user about data sharing and purchasing matches
Recent customer questions and our answers about data sharing, helpful for all. Thanks, Greg.
Takedown stores all of its data on your iPad and, as a result, an internet connection isn't required to manage your schedule or roster, score matches or generate statistical reports. This design yields a tremendous user benefit since many wrestling venues do not offer a public internet connection for retrieving data stored in the "cloud." However, when a disaster strikes -- a dog eats your iPad or an iOS upgrade wipes out your iPad -- you'll need a backup copy of Takedown's database for your new or fully restored iPad. Backing up your Takedown database is easy. This procedure backs up all of your schedule, roster and scoring data. In Takedown, go to the Schedule page and select the Season for which you want to backup your data:
After selecting the Season, tap the sharing icon (square with vertical arrow) to the right of the Seasons button:
This is the standard iPad email dialogue and attached to this message is the Takedown database for the selected Season. Send this email to the person (or persons) entrusted to keep your database in a safe place. Save the attachment wherever you'd normally store your precious data. We keep our database backups on Google Drive, but you can use Dropbox or your preferred file storage mechanism.
Initially, you'll should backup all of your Seasons. Thereafter, backup only when you've made changes. As active users, we typically backup our data after each scheduled event or at the end of each day in a multi-day event.

We're often asked "At a tournament when our team has multiple wrestlers competing at the same time, how can we combine the scoring data from multiple Takedown scorers?" Great question for which there are multiple answers. One approach is using a cloud storage service, like Dropbox, as a common repository for Takedown scoring data. In addition to archiving Takedown data in a central, network-accessible location, these services offer "folders" which are helpful organizers for your Takedown data. Click here for a brief tutorial on using Takedown with Dropbox to share and consolidate scoring data.
Sometimes, a single instance of Takedown isn't enough to capture all the scoring activity. At tournaments, multiple wrestlers from the same team compete at the same time. Or, the varsity and junior varsity teams compete at different events on the same day. In both cases, scoring information would need to be manually transferred to one of the iPads running Takedown. There must be a better way!
With this release, Takedown now offers a simple way to share data between multiple iPads. Data from an entire Season is exported from one Takedown instance to another using email and the iPad's "Open in..." capability. An exported Season contains a roster, schedule and all matches scored in that Season.
Generally speaking, an imported Season fills in the blanks; that is, the Season you're importing will generally not overwrite existing information. But, if your database is "missing" information, then data from the imported Season will be used. The details are surprisingly complex and there are some exceptions. But, that's the gist of it.
Select the Season for sharing with other users:
Tap the sharing arrow to the right of the Seasons button:
Enter the email addresses of the person(s) with whom you want to share the data and press "Send."
After long tapping on the email attachment and selecting "Open in Takedown", you'll see the following:
Any of the labels with a ">" can be tapped for more information. If you're satisfied with the results, tap "Save." If you change your mind, tap cancel.
Here are a few scenarios for using Takedown's data sharing feature:
You might find other uses for Takedown's data sharing feature.
Unless the Season on your iPad and the Season you're importing have identical names and start/end dates, a new Season will be created. If you want to augment an existing Season with the imported data, make sure the names, start/end dates are identical.
Data sharing makes it easy to use Takedown in situations where multiple wrestlers on the same team are competing simultaneously. And, just in time for the season! Have fun and
