Wrestling Joins the Advanced Analytics Era: Live Predictions Arrive in Takedown LIVE

Wrestling has lagged other sports in advanced analytics.
We’re changing that.

You’re watching a tight dual. Your wrestler is up 6–4 in the second period, riding on top, with the place going nuts. You — and probably half the gym — are asking the same three questions: Who’s going to win? What’s about to happen next? And if your wrestler comes out on top, how — a decision, a major, or a pin?

For years, wrestling has had no real way to answer those questions beyond gut feel. Now it does.

We’ve added live predictions to Takedown LIVE. While a match is happening, you can see each wrestler’s chance of winning, the most likely next scoring move, and the most probable way the bout ends — all updating in real time as the action unfolds on the mat.

The live Prediction panel in motion — win probability, the most likely next score, and the most probable outcome, all updating in real time as the points go up.

Wrestling has been behind. Way behind.

Walk into a baseball front office and you’ll find people who can tell you a hitter’s odds against an inside fastball. Basketball has shot charts and efficiency ratings. Football puts a win-probability graph on the screen during every drive. Soccer has “expected goals” — a stat that barely existed ten years ago and is now read aloud on TV.

Wrestling? Wrestling has mostly been left out of that revolution. And that’s strange, because it’s a naturally data-rich sport — every takedown, escape, reversal, near fall, and stalling call is a clean, recordable event. The information has always been there. The analytics that changed how fans watch and how coaches coach in other sports just never made it to the mat.

We think that’s a missed opportunity — for the people who coach this sport and the people who love it. So we did something about it.

What we built

The new prediction panel reads the same live scoring that already powers Takedown LIVE and turns it into three plain-language numbers:

Win probability — each wrestler’s live chance of winning, shown side by side and updating with every score.

Next score, and how likely — the single most probable thing to happen next (a takedown, an escape, a near fall, and so on), shown under the wrestler most likely to get it.

Outcome, and how likely — for the favored wrestler, the most probable way the bout ends: a decision, major decision, tech fall, or pin — and the odds of it.

None of this is a hot take. These predictions come from the patterns in more than 200,000 high school varsity bouts — the actual flow of actual matches, scored on the mat. The model compares the bout in front of you to all of that and updates its read every time a point is scored.

How to see it

It’s already live. Open Takedown LIVE on your phone, tablet or computer and follow your team. Once a live bout has its first scoring action, a Prediction button appears on the live match card. Tap it, and the panel opens. Tap again to tuck it away.

That’s the whole thing. No setup, no sign-up, no cost — the same free, real-time results experience wrestling families already rely on, now with a live read on where the match is headed.

(For the curious: we’re starting with high school varsity matches. College is on the way.)

What it means — and what it doesn’t

Let’s be clear about what these numbers are.

They’re a read, not a result. A 78% win probability means a wrestler in this exact spot has historically won about three out of four times. It does not mean the match is over. The other one-in-four happens constantly — that’s wrestling.

They don’t know your kid. The model sees the score, the position, and the clock. It doesn’t know who cut hard all week, who’s wrestling on a tweaked shoulder, who lives in the third period, or what the coach is about to call from the corner. Those things win and lose matches — and they’re exactly why we wrestle them instead of simulating them.

Upsets are the point, not a glitch. The best moments in this sport are the ones nobody saw coming — the freshman who sticks a returning placer, the gas-tank comeback in the ultimate tiebreaker. Predictions make those moments more fun, because now you can see the odds the kid just beat.

Think of it as a new lens, not a verdict. It gives fans a richer way to watch, gives coaches one more honest data point to chew on, and gives everyone in the gym a shared number to argue about between periods.

This is just the start

We built Takedown LIVE because wrestling deserves the same modern, real-time experience fans of every other sport take for granted. Live predictions are the next step — and, we believe, the leading edge of analytics in this sport. We intend to keep pushing: more insight, more depth, more of the story the numbers can tell, always in service of the coaches, athletes, and families who make wrestling what it is.

Wrestling has waited a long time for its analytics moment. We’re proud to bring it to the mat.
